12 hour days

It is quite amazing what can happen when you work from 8:30 in the morning to 8:30 at night. Here is a synopsis in photographs (you can go to the Photos page for captions on all the photos).

The next steps are:
finish the wiring, put siding up, put paneling on the interior loft walls... and more!

Till later,

Celina

  1. First off, nice pirouette, on a balance beam no less, I'm beginning to see there are a few young people out there with no talents, because you seem to have gotten them all :), absolutely love the roof, and you built it with your own 2 hands, let me see if I have this correctly, you pull the panel up into the slots and secure it with one or two screws, anyways, awesome progress, no doubt, from alot of hard work, by the look of the side boards, your siding is going to be vertical? looking forward to your next entry!

  2. Hi there. I have never seen a roof done like that before, and it looks wonderful. I was wondering if you could post a few pictures of how the flashing at the gable end holds down the diamonds. Or are they screwed down? Thanks! Chris from Canada.

    1. Hi Chris,

Very very delayed response... Most of the shingles and the flashing is screwed down, with absurd amounts of calking just to be sure. But at the edges, I pop riveted the flashing to the already screwed down pieces.

      Hope this helped!

  4. 12 hours of work definitely paid off! I'm glad to see that everything is going well with you and your plan. The roof was finally installed and with just a little more work to do, it will surely be done soon. Anyway, good luck on installing the sidings, and I'm looking forward in seeing the final result of your hard work. | Lauren Floyd @ TerrellsRoofingOKC.com

  9. Celina, please don't forget about your fan club out here - and do keep us posted about your progress on your house. This is an amazing accomplishment for anyone - and I commend you for your creativity, initiative, common sense, and good, old-fashioned work ethic. One of the great privileges of my life was working in the summers as a carpenter's helper to my grandfather from the age of 9 until I was 15, as well as many Saturdays during the school year. By age 16, I was out on my own, attending college, and supporting myself. Fifty years, twenty-three moves to 10 different states and four foreign countries, two children, two husbands, and sixteen grandchildren later, I'm now designing my own "tiny house" to be permanently built in the Deep East Texas piney woods - back in my childhood home. Your beautifully written and artistically photographed account of how you've begun to create your own independent, beautiful life is so affirming and inspiring for all women - and especially for all young women. I can hardly wait to hear and see how your creation of love and beauty turns out - or to get started on my own!

  10. Hi Celina. Your house is really inspiring. I'm wondering if you found a place where you can legally live in it? I'm hoping to move to Whidbey Island myself, and I really wanted a tiny house - but it doesn't look like the codes allow it. Any ideas?
